How Low Can You Go?

Although it was in the 50’s today–not a typical beach day–my daughter convinced me to go to the beach. The tides in San Diego have been at record lows. For a nature lover like my daughter, it was a day to see things that are usually hidden by the surf. I have to say I was also impressed with what the low tides revealed. After plentiful sea anemone and hermit crab sightings, what caught my eye were the designs in the tide pools. Due to my lack of knowledge about marine biology, I call them sand hieroglyphics.

I assume these patterns are made by creatures that are burrowing their way under the sand. They were so cool we snapped a few photographs to share. Remember, what you are looking at is under a few inches of very calm and clear ocean water. Click on the photos to enlarge them.
