Angels and Other Creatures: Mount Auburn Cemetery

During a recent visit to New Hampshire to help my sister move, I passed by many cemeteries. As historic as they were, I never saw an angel statue. As my trip ended, I realized I couldn’t possibly leave New England without seeing at least one angel. I did some research, found Mount Auburn Cemetery, and allotted myself an hour to tour it prior to my flight home.

Mount Auburn Cemetery is huge so one hour didn’t cover much. It’s location in Cambridge, behind Harvard and MIT, was unexpected as well. Dedicated in 1831, it is the first rural cemetery in the United States. Did you know the word cemetery comes from the Greek for “a sleeping place?”  I didn’t.  A rural cemetery differs from a graveyard and the harsher views of death in church burial plots.

Below are some of the wonderful angels of Mount Auburn. I hope someday to get back and see the ones I missed. This one is my favorite. If you click on in, it has a wonderful inscription about hope.

This one isn’t an angel, but she is beautiful and I love the flowers around her base.

Another lovely lady.

Angel hunting can have some magic moments. I came around a bend and saw this beautiful creature. It didn’t seem to mind me at all. We looked at each other for a minute or two and went on to finish our missions.

Side Note. On a tombstone in Portsmouth, NH, I finally got the answer to the question, “What ever happened to ET?”
